2D vs 3D vs AI-Assisted Video: Which Format Fits Your Brand?

The strongest visual approach is the one that supports the message. Choosing 2D, 3D or AI-assisted production because it is fashionable can push a project toward the wrong kind of complexity. Choosing it because it makes the product easier to understand—or the brand harder to forget—gives the format a purpose.

When 2D animation works best

2D is excellent for clarity. It can simplify abstract systems, turn data into a visual story and create a consistent world from a brand’s existing shapes, typography and colours. It is often a strong fit for SaaS explainers, campaign graphics, onboarding content and branded stories that need an expressive but controlled visual language.

Its advantage is not that it is automatically “simple.” Good 2D work can be richly designed. The advantage is precision: every element can be deliberately shaped around the information and the pace of the narration.

When 3D earns its place

3D is valuable when form, material, space or movement are central to the story. Product visualisation can reveal details that are difficult to film. Cinematic environments can position an object inside a distinctive world. Camera movement, lighting and physical scale can make a launch feel tangible and premium.

The trade-off is that modelling, materials, rigging, simulation, rendering and revision all add production decisions. 3D works best when those capabilities create something the audience genuinely needs to see or feel.

Where AI-assisted production fits

AI can be powerful for visual exploration, cinematic scenes and variations that would otherwise require a much larger production footprint. It can also help teams test directions quickly. But raw generation is not a finished film. Character and product consistency, shot continuity, art direction, compositing, editing, sound and brand accuracy still need careful human control.

For that reason, we treat AI as part of a production toolkit—not a replacement for the production process. Some projects benefit from an almost entirely traditional workflow. Others combine generated shots with motion graphics, 3D elements and detailed post-production.

A hybrid approach is often strongest

A SaaS launch might use 2D motion for interface clarity, 3D for a product hero moment and AI-assisted environments for cinematic scale. A brand film might combine a generated visual sequence with typography, compositing and a carefully designed soundscape. The transitions should feel like one film, not a collection of techniques.

Before choosing a format, define the message, audience, visual promise and practical constraints. Then let the production method follow. The goal is not to prove which tool was used. The goal is to create a piece that feels coherent, intentional and right for the brand.
